Fiji’s Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu is urging eligible Fijians to donate blood, especially during times of shortage. Speaking at the launch of the Family Planning and Commitment Policy in Suva, he emphasized that blood has a limited shelf life, making timely donations critical. “If there is a shortage of blood, then we go for blood drives,” he explained, calling on the general public to participate, particularly universal donors whose blood can help anyone in need.

The call for increased donations comes amid rising demand for blood products across the country. Vamarasi Fasala, the national manager of Fiji National Blood Services, recently noted that incidents such as motor vehicle accidents and outbreaks of diseases like dengue have contributed to this heightened need. The blood bank usually maintains about 70 percent stock levels, but current circumstances have strained these reserves.

Local health organizations, including the Fiji Red Cross Society, are actively working to encourage regular blood donations through initiatives and campaigns. Recent events, such as blood drives in various communities, highlight the importance of volunteerism in healthcare. These partnerships are essential for maintaining a stable blood supply, especially during critical periods in the healthcare system.

Furthermore, the ongoing narrative around blood donation awareness connects with broader healthcare challenges in Fiji, such as the current shortages of essential medicines and supplies in public hospitals. This situation underscores the need for a strong community response to health crises, showcasing how blood donations not only save lives but also strengthen the healthcare system.

By increasing community participation in blood drives and donating blood, Fijians can contribute positively to public health and safety. This campaign of collaboration and awareness serves to inspire hope that the healthcare system can become more resilient in addressing its challenges.
