Fiji’s Urban Shift: What It Means for the Future

Half of Fiji’s population now lives in urban areas, as pointed out by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the launch of the NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu on Friday.

Rabuka noted a significant shift, stating, “Rural-urban migration is a common issue, seen worldwide. Our efforts to address this are focused on our people.” He posed questions about the government’s role in supporting both rural and urban dwellers.

The aim of the NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program is to promote development where people reside. Rabuka emphasized that half of Fiji’s population is under 30 years old, with 63% of the Northern Division’s population aged between 15 and 64, which presents a crucial opportunity to leverage natural resources and human capital for economic growth.

He expressed a vision for a more prosperous and resilient Fiji and reiterated the commitment to transform Vanua Levu into a thriving tourism hub that fuels economic growth, generates job opportunities, and attracts investments both domestically and internationally. The government is dedicated to a comprehensive approach to enhance the economy, improve the quality of life for its citizens, and secure a better future.
