Fiji’s Unsung Heroes: A Journey Through Time and Honor

As I reflect on Fiji’s history and its journey to independence, I find myself revisiting old photographs belonging to my late father. Among these images are snapshots of some of Fiji’s most prominent leaders, individuals who have left a significant legacy during a time when circumstances were vastly different.

Fiji experienced colonial rule and the harsh realities of apartheid, along with its uncomfortable and oppressive practices. However, there was also a sense of inspiration during those challenging times, largely due to the dedication of men and women who invested their time, resources, and energy in the hope of uniting a deeply divided nation.

These leaders worked with wisdom, showing great respect for the cultural norms and protocols that were esteemed by those forging the path to independence. Not every leader was in the public eye; many operated in the background to ensure the country was steered toward a positive future.

While they were not without their imperfections, these individuals understood the significance of “Honour” and what it meant to be “Honourable.” Stripped of their political beliefs, their aspirations aligned in their vision for a newly independent Fiji.

Sometimes I pause to look at their photographs, and nostalgia washes over me, taking me back to the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. The memories bring a bittersweet feeling as I recall the people, places, and events that have become integral to my personal history.

I vividly remember several of these leaders visiting our home on Kimberley Street during my childhood. They would engage in lengthy discussions on various topics, predominantly politics. Even as a young boy, I was captivated by their debates about moving the country toward independence.

Their discussions could become intense, but this stemmed from their passion rather than any personal conflict. I noticed they respected one another’s opinions and maintained their convictions without resentment.

These leaders hailed from various backgrounds and communities, yet they served Fiji with honor. Though they did not always see eye to eye, they shared a profound respect for each other’s perspectives.

I was fortunate to be in their presence alongside their families. While I may not have fully grasped the depth of their relationships, it was evident they had a strong mutual bond and shared a vision for a brighter future for all Fijians.

I cherish the lessons of love and respect I learned from them, though many of their names escape my memory. However, some names remain etched in my mind due to their impact on a young boy like me.

Ratu Sir Edward Cakobau was dignified and always greeted me with a military salute, which I would return. His elegant demeanor and eloquent speech made a lasting impression on me.

Ratu Sir George Cakobau exuded a regal presence, and when our family visited the island of Bau, it felt like stepping into a storybook. The traditional welcome we received was awe-inspiring, and the experience is something I will always treasure.

Ravuama Vunivalu captivated everyone with his powerful speeches yet demonstrated genuine kindness and integrity. Semesa Sikivou was humbly warm, and our families shared a close friendship that I cherish.

Abdul Lateef was charming and filled with laughter, making him a beloved member of our community. Ratu David Toganivalu had a knack for connecting with people and brought charisma and intelligence to his leadership.

Ram Samy Reddy was a wise and loyal man who significantly contributed to the construction and hospitality industries, while Sethi Narayan quietly achieved great things with grace and generosity.

Chandar Pal Singh opened his home to us, offering kindness and a sense of adventure, while Fred Archibald provided wise counsel that felt profound. Dr Ram Lakhan, known for his gruff exterior, had a kind heart and was an important figure in our community.

There were many others who, alongside their families, dedicated their time and resources to serving Fiji with distinction. While I may not remember everyone, I salute them all and express gratitude for their contributions to our nation.

We are deeply indebted to these remarkable individuals. May their surviving families be blessed with love, grace, and goodwill.
