The University of Fiji is embarking on an ambitious and progressive journey toward 2025, placing a significant focus on developing unique iTaukei academic programs. This initiative is part of the university’s broader efforts to preserve and celebrate the iTaukei culture, with the Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS) being a pivotal aspect of this mission. Notably, the CIS is the only dedicated center of its kind in the country.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem emphasized the center’s crucial role in providing specialized education that keeps indigenous knowledge at the forefront of academic discussions. “Our Centre for iTaukei Studies is unique because it’s the only one in Fiji. We’re the only university that offers a dedicated center that is specifically for iTaukei studies—that encompasses culture, language, performance, art, and craft,” she stated.
A significant development planned includes the expansion of educational activities to Levuka, where traditional chiefs will be appointed as adjunct professors. This initiative aims to enhance the learning experience by allowing the local community to learn directly from elders about their cultural heritage, language, and history. Professor Shameem described this as a major attraction for the Lomaiviti people.
In addition to cultural initiatives, the university is making notable advances in science and technology education, particularly in emerging fields such as robotics. Professor Shameem highlighted the importance of understanding contemporary issues related to artificial intelligence, its societal implications, and associated risks.
