The University of Fiji is set to forge an ambitious and innovative course for 2025, placing a significant focus on unique iTaukei academic programs. Through its Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS), which is the sole dedicated center of its kind in Fiji, the university aims to honor and preserve iTaukei culture.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem emphasized the center’s vital role in offering specialized education related to iTaukei culture. She noted that this program ensures that indigenous knowledge remains at the forefront of academic discussions. “Our Centre for iTaukei Studies is unique because it’s the only one in Fiji. We’re the only university that offers a dedicated center specifically for iTaukei studies—covering culture, language, performance, art, and craft,” Professor Shameem stated.
In a transformative initiative, the university intends to extend the center’s educational offerings to Levuka, involving the appointment of traditional chiefs as adjunct professors. Professor Shameem explained that this move would allow elders to share their wisdom on traditional cultural aspects, benefiting the local community by providing insights into their language, performances, and history.
Additionally, the University of Fiji is making significant strides in science and technology education, particularly in emerging fields such as robotics. Professor Shameem highlighted the importance of topics like artificial intelligence and blockchain, emphasizing the need for students to understand the social implications and risks associated with these advancements.
With a clear commitment to student well-being and success, Professor Shameem reassured that everything the university undertakes in 2025 will be innovative and distinct from other institutions. “We believe that to be future-ready, the University of Fiji has to be ahead of the game,” she said.
The University of Fiji’s forward-looking vision for 2025 is set to create a model for higher education in Fiji and beyond, focusing on distinctive academic programs, cultural preservation, and advancements in technology.
This initiative not only underscores the importance of cultural preservation but also highlights the university’s role in preparing students for a future with rapidly evolving technology. It’s an inspiring step towards ensuring that indigenous knowledge is woven into the fabric of modern education while embracing scientific advancements.
