Fiji National University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, has announced the institution’s proactive stance in creating a drug-free learning environment as the nation grapples with rising drug use among students. This initiative is timely given the alarming statistics indicating that approximately 1.7% of students, equating to over 3,500 individuals, are reportedly involved in some form of drug use, as highlighted in earlier reports.

Next month, FNU is set to kick off a week-long awareness campaign to coincide with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The campaign will feature seminars, peer support programs, and counseling services aimed at promoting a culture of safety and wellness within the university’s campus. The initiative aligns with parallel efforts from the Ministry of Education and the Fiji Police, who are currently working towards implementing stronger preventive measures, including discussions about random drug checks in schools.

Dr. Henry Waqa, a general practitioner at FNU’s UniClinic, emphasized the goal of cultivating a culture of care, responsibility, and resilience within campus life, ensuring that students have access to essential resources. The university plans weekly support clinics for students and staff struggling with substance-related issues, reinforcing its commitment to the community’s well-being.

Additionally, FNU is launching a survey aimed at gauging attitudes towards drug use among students and staff, which may help inform future policies and initiatives. Counselors at the university, like Kantha Mani, have encouraged students to reach out for help, ensuring that discussions about such sensitive matters remain confidential.

The collaboration between educational institutions, healthcare providers, and law enforcement demonstrates a collective commitment to combating the drug crisis in Fiji’s educational landscape. This comprehensive approach not only aims to enhance the well-being of students but also fosters a supportive community aligned against substance misuse, offering hope for a brighter, healthier future for Fiji’s youth.
