The University of Fiji is paving the way for 2025 with an ambitious and creative approach, particularly through the introduction of specialized iTaukei academic programs. This initiative aims to honor and maintain iTaukei culture, with the university’s Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS) being the only center of its kind in Fiji dedicated solely to these studies.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem emphasized the unique nature of the CIS, which focuses on various aspects of iTaukei culture, including language, performance, arts, and crafts. “Our Centre for iTaukei Studies is special because it’s the only one in Fiji. We uniquely provide education specifically around the iTaukei cultural narrative,” she stated.
In a significant development, the university plans to extend its educational reach to Levuka, where traditional chiefs will be enlisted as adjunct professors. “This initiative will allow local communities to learn from their elders about their cultural heritage, language, performance, and history,” explained Professor Shameem.
On top of its cultural efforts, the University of Fiji is also making notable advancements in the fields of science and technology, with particular attention to emerging disciplines like robotics. Professor Shameem pointed out the need for students to comprehend various aspects of artificial intelligence, including its societal implications and associated risks.
“Our vision for 2025 will introduce new and innovative programs that set us apart from other institutions. The University of Fiji is determined to be at the forefront of education, ensuring our students are well-prepared for the future,” she said.
The goals outlined by the University of Fiji for 2025 emphasize a blend of cultural preservation and technological progress, establishing a pioneering standard for higher education in Fiji and beyond.
This initiative not only reflects a strong commitment to preserving cultural heritage but also signals a forward-thinking approach to education that prepares students for a rapidly evolving world. The combination of traditional knowledge and modern technology is likely to create a well-rounded educational experience that benefits both students and the community.
