More than 18 months after the formation of the External Review Committee to evaluate the performance of Fiji’s major universities, concerns are being raised about the incomplete status of the final report. The Opposition, particularly MP Hem Chand, has expressed frustration over the delay, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the process. Chand questioned Education Minister Aseri Radrodro during a parliamentary session regarding the cause for the hold-up.

In response, Minister Radrodro stated that the delay stems from the ongoing collection of feedback from the universities involved, namely the Fiji National University, the University of the South Pacific, and the University of Fiji. He assured that the initial report had already been submitted to the universities for their comments and that the final version would be presented to the Cabinet upon completion.

This review aims to assess critical areas such as academic quality, institutional governance, and overall operational efficiency. However, earlier reports have revealed significant concerns from the universities regarding the review’s methodology, which Fiji National University, in particular, has outright rejected due to issues of credibility.

Additionally, Minister Radrodro has mentioned the potential for appointing an independent reviewer to ensure the integrity and professionalism of the findings. This move reflects broader ongoing efforts to foster transparency within Fiji’s educational system, a sentiment echoed in previous articles highlighting similar integrity concerns across various institutions.

The situation illustrates the pressing need for comprehensive evaluations of educational standards in Fiji. By addressing the critical issues of methodology and feedback incorporation, the government appears committed to improving the higher education landscape, ultimately benefiting students and promoting accountability within the system. As the review continues, there remains a hopeful anticipation that constructive changes will emerge from this process.
