The University of Fiji is embarking on an ambitious and forward-thinking journey aimed at 2025, with a dedicated focus on offering distinctive iTaukei academic programs. This initiative is part of a broader effort to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage of iTaukei culture, led by the university’s Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS), which is the only center of its kind in Fiji.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem emphasized the center’s pivotal role in providing specialized education that prioritizes indigenous knowledge within academic conversations. “Our Centre for iTaukei Studies is unique because it’s the only one in Fiji. We’re the only university that offers a dedicated center for iTaukei studies,” she remarked, highlighting its emphasis on culture, language, performance, art, and craft.
In a significant development, the university plans to broaden the center’s educational presence to Levuka, where traditional chiefs will be appointed as adjunct professors. This initiative aims to deepen the community’s connection to its cultural roots. Professor Shameem stated, “Traditional chiefs will teach the upcoming generations about important aspects of their heritage, including language, performance, and history.”
In addition to cultural advancements, the University of Fiji is making notable progress in science and technology programs. The university is prioritizing education in cutting-edge fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and blockchain technology. Professor Shameem underscored the necessity of understanding artificial intelligence and its implications, stating, “It’s crucial to comprehend its limits, functions in society, and associated risks.”
