Fiji is reaffirming its commitment to universal health coverage as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 agenda, yet there are growing calls for the inclusion of individuals living with diabetes, especially those diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, in the nation’s health policy discussions. Kini Marawa, the Executive Director of Diabetes Fiji, has pointed out that this vulnerable group is often sidelined in important decisions that significantly impact their health and wellbeing.

Marawa underscores the necessity for people with diabetes to participate actively in health decision-making processes. He insists that authentic inclusion is critical for Fiji to genuinely uphold the principle of universal health coverage, which operates on the foundational promise that everyone should have access to healthcare services, without anyone being marginalized.

Critical concerns are being raised regarding whether the commitment to this promise is fully being acted upon for those living with Type 1 diabetes. The dialogue emphasizes the need for clarity: if the commitment to universal healthcare is genuine, why is the voice of Type 1 diabetics not being integrated into the framework?

While access to medication is vital, the conversation extends well beyond the provision of basic medical treatments. Marawa stressed that managing Type 1 diabetes demands comprehensive ongoing support, which includes financial, medical, and social aspects. The condition requires continuous monitoring, proper insulin management, and reliable access to medical supplies. Without such adequate support, individuals managing Type 1 diabetes are at risk of serious health issues and long-term complications.

In light of these concerns, there is a hopeful push for more inclusive policies that recognize the unique needs of people with diabetes, fostering a healthcare environment where everyone can thrive. This initiative resonates with the broader goals of SDG 2030, aiming for a more equitable health system where no one is left behind.
