Fiji’s national Under-20 rugby team is set to receive a boost with the addition of eleven overseas players as they prepare for the upcoming Oceania Under-20 Championship in Sigatoka. Head coach Senirusi Seruvakula acknowledged the significance of these players, highlighting the competitive experience they bring from playing club rugby abroad.
The selected players hail from Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and France, with six players from Australia and three from New Zealand. Seruvakula noted that the exposure these athletes have gained through various competitions far exceeds what is available in Fiji, where opportunities are primarily limited to the annual Deans Trophy.
During the recent Super Rugby U20s tournament in New Zealand, the coaching staff was particularly impressed by the skills exhibited by these overseas players. Seruvakula stated, “These boys have been playing a lot more club rugby and have more competition amongst schools in both Australia and New Zealand and in the USA and France.” He added, “That was one thing that stood out for me and the coaching panel.”
The selected overseas players include Charlie Tagicakibau, Mosese Ravula, Vaimoe Koroi, Apenisa Naevo, Noa Rauluni, Thomas Setaia, Adam Khan, Meli Tueli, Bogi Kikau, Vilimone Bainibure, and Iliesa Baravilala. They are expected to join the training squad next week as the team gears up for the championship scheduled from May 26 to June 11 at Lawaqa Park.
This strategy not only strengthens the team’s competitive edge but also showcases a commitment to developing young talent in Fijian rugby. The combination of local and overseas-based players promises to enhance team dynamics, potentially leading to a successful campaign in upcoming international tournaments. The integration of international players also reflects a broader dedication to nurturing and promoting rugby at all levels.
Overall, the proactive approach of the coaching staff aims to provide a future-ready squad, instilling hope for a strong showing in the Oceania Championship and beyond.
