The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) Under-20 rugby team is set to embark on an exciting tour to New Zealand next month, with a clear focus on achieving victory. Head coach Sireli Bobo announced that the team will commence their training camp in January 2024, starting on the 3rd, and will depart for New Zealand on the 29th of the month.
Bobo expressed his gratitude towards the FSC for organizing a successful Under-20 sevens series that featured five legs, taking place in various locations including Navua, Sigatoka, Savusavu, Rakiraki, and culminating at Suva’s HFC Bank stadium on November 30. He noted the impressive turnout and the emergence of young talent throughout the competition.
Following the conclusion of the U20 series, Bobo officially named his squad, acknowledging the spirited participation of teams such as Village Boys, QVSOBs, Ca’au, and Dominion Brothers. He highlighted how even lesser-known teams managed to challenge more established clubs, showcasing the depth of talent present in Fijian rugby.
Bobo’s primary goal for the upcoming tour is not only to secure wins but also to expose players to international competition, significantly contributing to their development. He emphasized the necessity of a strong grassroots program to nurture future talent.
Remarkably, this tour will also mark a significant milestone for some players, as it will be their first time flying on an airplane. “This tour will be special,” Bobo remarked, reinforcing that the team is intended to serve as a platform for these young athletes to aspire for national representation in the future.
This initiative reflects a commitment to nurturing the next generation of rugby players in Fiji, fostering their growth through valuable international experiences.
In summary, the FSC Under-20 team is eager to leverage this opportunity in New Zealand, focusing on both competitive success and personal growth for young athletes. This positive outlook on youth development in sports is a hopeful sign for the future of Fijian rugby.
