The Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL) has made an exciting announcement regarding the selection of the Sports World Fijian under-20 rugby squad for their upcoming tour to New Zealand. Officially revealed on Saturday via the Fiji Rugby website, the final lineup comprises 30 players, chosen from an initial pool of 45 after a rigorous evaluation process.
Under the guidance of head coach Senirusi Seruvakula, along with assistant coach Saiasi Fuli and high-performance coach Mike Legge, the team has been training diligently since late last year. The players have undergone extensive preparations, which have included fitness tests, zone training, and trial matches. Coach Seruvakula highlighted the significant growth the athletes have displayed, emphasizing that this tour is vital for their development as emerging stars in Fijian rugby.
The Fijian under-20 team will participate in two prestigious tournaments: the Oceania Rugby U20 Challenge, set to take place from late February to early March in Auckland, where they will face off against teams from Tonga, Samoa, and an invitational Moana Pacifica side, and the Super Rugby U20 competition occurring from March 15-22.
The squad features players including Rupeni Nuinui, Marika Koroi, and John Toe, among others. To ensure readiness for any injuries, seven additional players will be on standby to provide support during the tour.
Before their departure for New Zealand, the team will hold a mini camp in Suva from January 21-23. This preparation underscores a strategic commitment to not only win but also to nurture the next generation of rugby players in Fiji.
This initiative reflects hope for the future of Fijian rugby, highlighting the dedication to developing young talent that promises to elevate the country’s presence on the international stage. The participation in these tournaments exposes the players to high-level competition, paving the way for their growth and potential future success in rugby.
