Australian coach Sanjiv Dubey is optimistic about the future of the Cricket Fiji under-19 team as they undergo significant training at a camp designed to enhance their skills ahead of the East Asia-Pacific World Cup qualifiers this April in Japan. The 20-day training camp began on January 8 at Albert Park in Suva and will continue until January 25.
Dubey, who is originally from India and holds a Level 3 coaching certification, has been with Cricket Fiji for three years. He emphasizes that while the team is still in the early stages of development, there is immense potential to cultivate. The training camp not only aims to refine core cricket techniques but also focuses on building mental resilience, which Dubey highlights as essential for competing on international platforms.
“The mental toughness required for international tournaments cannot be overstated,” Dubey remarked, stressing the importance of preparing players to handle pressure and adapt to challenging situations. His leadership and vast experience are proving invaluable, as he instills a strong work ethic in the team.
The camp is not exclusive to male players, as it also welcomes female participants from the ongoing 2024/25 Women’s T20 League. This inclusive approach underscores Cricket Fiji’s commitment to diversity and fostering a supportive environment for all young cricketers.
Dubey expressed confidence in the young athletes, appreciating their eagerness to learn and their character. “With the right guidance, I am confident they will continue to develop and showcase their talents,” he added.
Overall, this initiative not only prepares the team for the upcoming qualifiers, but it also represents a significant effort by Cricket Fiji to enhance its profile in international cricket. Dubey believes that consistent investment in player development can lead to progress beyond mere participation in tournaments, thus setting a promising pathway for the future of cricket in the region.
In summary, the training camp serves as a crucial stepping stone for the players, laying a strong foundation for growth and excellence in the sport. With a focus on skill development and inclusivity, the future looks bright for cricket in Fiji, paving the way for aspiring cricketers to excel on the global stage.
