The Fiji Under-17 AFL team is filled with excitement and gratitude following their recent jersey presentation at the Calvary Temple Assemblies of God in Samabula, Suva. Ahead of the upcoming 2024 Pacific Cup, both the men’s and women’s youth teams, along with the senior men’s squad, received their official jerseys from Dynamic Xtreme Concept (DXC).
Loata Vakausausa, the talent academy manager and development officer for AFL Fiji, discussed the rigorous preparations the teams endured leading up to the tournament. She noted how the program has significantly expanded, growing from a humble beginning of just six kids at training sessions to over 60 participants now.
Despite facing challenges such as players missing classes and family commitments, Vakausausa commended the team’s dedication and hard work. She emphasized the historic significance of this year’s tournament as the inaugural participation of Fiji’s U17 sides in the AFL competition.
While the traveling group will compete with only three teams at the tournament, Vakausausa expressed concern about the absence of a senior women’s team, a situation that remains beyond their control. She also appealed to the families, friends, and supporters of the national teams for their continued prayers, acknowledging the strong community support displayed at the jersey presentation.
Notably, nine students from Suva Grammar School are part of the national representation, showcasing the local talent that contributes to Fiji’s AFL ambitions.
This enthusiastic spirit among the youth teams is a beacon of hope for the future of AFL in Fiji, creating a promising platform for the sport’s growth and development in the region.
The commitment and support from the community serve as an encouraging reminder that, with collective effort and dedication, the potential for success is limitless. As Fiji prepares for the Pacific Cup, there is optimism that this experience will inspire younger generations and contribute to the continued popularity of AFL in Fiji.
