The Fiji under-17 AFL team is buzzing with enthusiasm after their recent jersey presentation event held at the Calvary Temple Assemblies of God church in Samabula, Suva. This celebration marks a significant step for the U17 national squad, which includes both men’s and women’s teams, ahead of the 2024 Pacific Cup.

Loata Vakausausa, the talent academy manager and development officer for AFL Fiji, shared insights into the team’s rigorous preparations for the tournament. She reflected on the journey of the sport, noting that they initially started with just six participants during training sessions. However, their numbers have grown to over 60 as interest in the sport blossoms.

Despite facing challenges, such as players occasionally missing training due to academic or family commitments, Vakausausa emphasized the dedication and commitment shown by the athletes. She proudly announced that the U17 teams will represent Fiji as groundbreaking participants in the AFL tournament.

While the team will participate with three squads, there is a noted absence of a senior women’s team, a concern that Vakausausa mentioned is beyond their control. Nevertheless, she calls upon the community for continued support, as evidenced by the fantastic turnout for the jersey presentation.

Additionally, nine students from Suva Grammar School have been selected to join the national teams, highlighting the engagement of local schools in promoting sports.

This positive momentum for AFL in Fiji not only showcases the sport’s growing popularity but also reflects the strong community spirit that supports these young athletes as they prepare to represent their nation on this international stage.

In summary, the Fiji under-17 AFL team’s preparation for the Pacific Cup is a testament to their hard work and commitment, marking a hopeful future for Australian Rules Football in the region.
