Fiji’s U16 Footballers Dream Big Against Giants New Zealand

Fiji’s Under-16 football coach, Sunil Kumar, acknowledges the challenges ahead as his team prepares to take on New Zealand in the OFC U16 Championship final this Sunday in Pape’ete, Tahiti. Kumar recognizes New Zealand as the favorites but holds out hope for a surprising result.

“Our goal coming into this tournament was to make history,” Kumar stated. “Fiji has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup, and we have achieved that. However, our aim has also been to clinch the championship.”

He emphasized the importance of this match, noting, “We have a significant opportunity ahead of us. We intend to play with a clear mindset and give our best effort. There is no greater chance for the boys and the team than this.”

On the other side, New Zealand, led by coach Martin Bullock, is feeling confident after previously dominating Fiji 7-1 during group play. They have scored an impressive 28 goals while conceding just one in their four matches thus far.

“We have already played against Fiji and won that match, which places us as the favorites,” Bullock said. “Our performance was outstanding, and we will take valuable insights from that group game. We understand their style of play, and they are likely aware of ours. We will strategize on how to exploit any advantages while staying true to our game.”

Bullock emphasized the significance of reaching the final, stating, “Regardless of the competition, once you reach a final, the goal is to win. We are excited for the upcoming match.”
