Fiji’s official under-20 chess team departed from Nadi International Airport this morning en route to Brisbane, Australia, where they will participate in the 2025 Oceania Youth Zonal Chess Championship. This prestigious event, scheduled from December 13-17, will see the Fijian team compete against a strong contingent of 360 players from across the Oceania region, making it one of the largest and most competitive junior chess tournaments held in the area.

The six-member squad includes Lionel Vaurasi (13) for the U14 Open Division, Latileta Masau (14) in the U14 Girls Division, Praveer Singh and Randev Singh (both 17) competing in the U18 Open Division, Tanvi Prasad (18) representing the U20 Girls Division, and Rudr Prasad (20) in the U20 Open Division. Kristy Fong accompanies the team as the Manager and Chaperone.

Under the guidance of CM Manoj Kumar, Fiji’s National Chess Champion, the players have recently engaged in intensive training sessions. These preparations have focused on enhancing their opening strategies, tactical skills, and endgame techniques, aimed at equipping them for the fierce competition ahead.

On December 6, team members received their official uniforms at a presentation held at the Aquatic Centre Conference Room in Suva. Team Manager Kristy Fong expressed gratitude to all supporters, particularly the main sponsor, Menon Construction Limited, for their essential backing. Other significant contributions came from the Bank of the South Pacific and the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, along with support from additional sponsors like Eagle Cleaning Ltd, Wood Engineers Ltd, and Ezytech Computers (Fiji). The team uniforms were proudly sponsored by Verson Tavana.

“With 360 of the best young players from Oceania converging in Brisbane, this is a huge opportunity for our team,” said Fong. She emphasized that, thanks to their sponsors and expert coaching, the players are well-prepared and eager to represent Fiji on an international platform.

The Fiji Chess Federation, along with the wider chess community, extends their best wishes for safe travels and success to the team as they embark on this exciting journey.
