Fiji’s U-16 team showcased an impressive performance by defeating Tahiti 2-1, securing their spot in the finals of the OFC Championship. This victory also guarantees their participation in next year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup set to take place in Qatar.
The match opened with Tahiti taking charge early on, yet they could not penetrate Fiji’s resilient defense. Fiji’s first breakthrough came from Veleni Rasorewa, who displayed exceptional skill by bypassing two defenders and deftly placing the ball past the Tahitian goalkeeper in the 7th minute, setting a vigorous tempo for the match.
Although Tahiti maintained much of the ball, they were unable to translate that possession into goals, with their closest opportunity hitting the post just before halftime. Fiji capitalized on their counterattack strategy once again in the 68th minute when Rasorewa scored his second goal with a powerful shot, extending Fiji’s lead.
Tahiti managed to reduce the deficit with a bit of luck, as a long-range effort deflected off a Fijian defender and found the net, momentarily reigniting their hopes. However, Fiji’s defense remained steadfast against Tahiti’s increased pressure, holding the lead until the match concluded.
