Fiji’s Turmeric Boom: Rooted in Growth and Global Demand

Fiji’s agricultural sector has experienced remarkable growth, particularly in exports, which surged by 20.1 percent in the 2023-2024 period. This represents a notable increase from the 15.8 percent growth recorded between 2021-2022. According to Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu, one of the standout crops driving this growth is turmeric, with exports projected to reach $27.3 million this year, up from $24.6 million in the previous year.

Turmeric has become a cornerstone of Fiji’s export market, with the majority of its exports—around 97 percent—headed for the United States. This statistic underscores the significant demand for Fijian turmeric on the global stage, with exports climbing from just 62 tonnes in 2013 to an impressive 3,121 tonnes in 2023.

Island Magic, a company focused on turmeric production and processing, is actively expanding its operations, cultivating 100 acres of turmeric planting with plans for an additional 300 acres in the Cuvu Hills of Nadroga. This commitment to enhancing turmeric cultivation demonstrates the potential for not only boosting exports but also improving livelihoods for local farmers.

Minister Rayalu emphasized the importance of investing in the agricultural sector to ensure financial stability for Fiji. By reviving traditional crops and prioritizing the cultivation of agricultural products such as cocoa and coffee, the government hopes to lay a foundation for a sustainable agricultural future, ultimately leading to improved economic opportunities for rural communities.

The trajectory of Fiji’s agricultural sector, particularly in turmeric production, reflects a successful strategy to harness the country’s natural resources while fostering resilience against economic challenges. Such efforts showcase a positive outlook for Fijian agriculture, highlighting opportunities for further innovation and development in the industry. Given the strong international market demand, Fiji’s farmers can look forward to a promising future in both domestic and global markets.
