The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has expressed its strong support for the truth-telling initiative, a crucial component of the national reconciliation process in Fiji. GCC Chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula emphasized that identifying individuals involved in past conflicts is an essential step toward healing the nation. His remarks came in response to renewed requests from the Opposition for increased transparency regarding past coups.

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has been vocal about the necessity for accountability, particularly following Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s participation in the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission program last year. Seruiratu stated that it is time for the commission to reveal the names of those involved in past upheavals. While Prime Minister Rabuka has maintained that decisions regarding disclosures are within the commission’s purview, the GCC’s backing of the truth and reconciliation process underscores a collective desire for healing.

Ratu Seruvakula believes that this effort is the right approach to foster national healing, citing support for the initiative’s ongoing progress. He echoed sentiments from Mick Beddoes, urging the military to acknowledge the pain experienced by those affected by previous coups, even if many current military personnel were not directly involved in the command decisions made at that time.

Additionally, Ratu Seruvakula noted that many members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) either were not born or were not involved in earlier conflicts, highlighting the generational shift within the military. He stressed that confronting past grievances openly can aid the nation in its journey forward.

Regarding the RFMF’s Restoration and Reconciliation Program, Ratu Seruvakula commended Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai for his efforts to rebuild public trust in the military institution. He reiterated that healing requires patience, urging the public to allow reconciliation initiatives to unfold. Ratu Seruvakula concluded by stressing the importance of providing both victims and perpetrators the opportunity to share their stories, which can lead to greater unity and a more harmonious future for Fiji.
