The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has a crucial responsibility to identify key figures such as politicians, business leaders, chiefs, and religious authorities who have been involved in or supported previous coups. This assertion was made by the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Inia Seruiratu, during a parliamentary session where he stressed the significance of uncovering the truth surrounding Fiji’s political history.
During a passionate discussion, Seruiratu and other opposition members expressed their concerns regarding the authenticity of the TRC. The Fiji TRC Bill 2024 was successfully passed with a vote of 33 in favor and 15 against, granting the commission the authority to summon individuals to provide their accounts of events related to the coups.
Seruiratu highlighted the need for accountability, stating that it is essential to identify the politicians and business figures implicated in these historical events. He emphasized that without the power to summon individuals, the TRC’s efforts could be undermined. He referenced his past experiences as a military officer during a court martial in 2004, urging for a thorough investigation into the political figures behind the military actions.
The TRC steering committee is chaired by Assistant Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, who reported directly to the Prime Minister. She confirmed that the commission would have the necessary powers to call upon individuals involved in coup activities.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka noted that while drafting the Bill, consultations with both victims and perpetrators revealed strong support for the establishment of the TRC. He believes that the commission will foster healing and reconciliation within society, encouraging open discussions about the political turmoil that has affected many lives.
The establishment of the TRC is a significant step towards national reconciliation, providing a platform for truth-telling that may aid in healing the wounds of the past. Through this process, there is hope for restoring faith in governance and rebuilding community trust.
