A public consultation on the proposed legal framework for establishing the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) took place in Nausori yesterday, but the turnout was disappointing. Only a small group attended, with Bijen Singh voicing his concern over the low participation.

Despite the sparse attendance, Waisea Tuisese, one of the attendees, expressed appreciation for the presentation and emphasized the necessity of the TRC in Fiji. He pointed out that numerous community issues have emerged due to a lack of trust and expressed optimism for the commission’s formation.

Singh reflected on Fiji’s tumultuous past and noted that this initiative is a significant step taken by the government. He stressed the importance of uncovering historical truths and facilitating public hearings that would recognize the suffering of victims, contributing to national healing. Singh believes that the TRC will recommend reforms that will positively reshape the nation once it is operational.
