The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) now has the responsibility of identifying politicians, business leaders, chiefs, and religious figures who were involved in or supported past coups. Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu highlighted the significance of “truth” during a recent session in Parliament, where emotions ran high as he and other opposition members expressed concerns regarding the authenticity of the commission.

Parliament passed the Fiji TRC Bill 2024, with 33 votes in favor and 15 against, granting the commission summoning powers to compel those implicated in coups to share their perspectives. Mr. Seruiratu emphasized the need for the government to confront the truth surrounding these events, urging that all parties, including politicians and business associates, should be held accountable.

The TRC steering committee is chaired by Assistant Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, who oversees the commission’s operations and ensures it retains its authority to summon individuals tied to coup activities. The committee is composed of several assistant ministers from various sectors, reinforcing the collaborative approach to this significant initiative.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that extensive consultations with both victims and perpetrators influenced the drafting of the TRC Bill. He affirmed that there was widespread support for establishing the commission across different demographics in Fiji. The TRC, expected to foster healing and reconciliation, aims to promote truth-telling regarding the political turmoil faced by survivors.

This new chapter for Fiji holds the potential for substantial societal healing. The forthcoming Truth and Reconciliation Commission may lead to deeper understanding and reconciliation between communities, laying the foundation for a more unified and peaceful future. With the commitment to truth and accountability, the TRC has the opportunity to positively impact the nation’s trajectory.
