The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is now tasked with determining the involvement of various figures, including politicians, business leaders, chiefs, and religious leaders, in past coups. This development was highlighted by the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, during a parliamentary session where calls for accountability and truth took precedence.
During the discussions, emotions ran high as members of the opposition expressed their concern over the integrity of the commission. The Fiji TRC Bill 2024 was successfully passed with a vote of 33 in favor and 15 against. This commission will possess the authority to summon individuals involved in coups, allowing them to share their experiences and insights.
Seruiratu emphasized the importance of identifying political actors behind military actions, stating, “Military is the means, political is the objective.” He urged that the truth-telling process must involve not only political figures but also business and community leaders who may have supported coup activities.
The TRC steering committee, led by Assistant Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, consists of various assistant ministers, all of whom will report directly to the Prime Minister. Kiran confirmed that the commission will have the authority to summon those connected to coups, thereby enhancing the validity of the process.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka shared that extensive consultations were conducted during the drafting of the Bill, with a notable consensus from both victims and perpetrators for establishing the TRC. He believes that this initiative will foster healing and reconciliation within the community, while encouraging survivors to share their truth regarding past political turmoil.
The commission will consist of five members appointed by the President, and Rabuka assured that the TRC’s independence and integrity are firmly mandated.
