Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed that a tribunal will investigate various allegations of misconduct against suspended Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa. This decision comes despite the recent closure of an investigation by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), which concluded that no criminal offenses were committed related to Nakarawa’s appointment of his wife to a role within the corrections service. FICAC stated that under the 2013 Constitution’s Section 130(7), the Corrections Commissioner has the authority to make such appointments, but acknowledged the public’s concern about perceptions of nepotism.

Rabuka noted that the tribunal would not limit its inquiry to the FICAC investigation, but would also address a broader spectrum of complaints about Nakarawa. He stressed the tribunal’s importance in ensuring due process, emphasizing that all parties involved will have the opportunity to present their perspectives. This aligns with previous statements made by Rabuka regarding the need for transparency and fairness in handling serious allegations within public service.

While FICAC found that the appointment process followed legal protocols – including public advertisements and interviews with multiple candidates – it cautioned against potential public perceptions of nepotism. The commission recommended that future similar appointments be subject to independent review to safeguard against any appearance of favoritism.

This situation underscores ongoing challenges concerning governance and accountability in the Fiji Corrections Service. The Prime Minister’s proactive response signals a commitment to addressing these concerns, suggesting that the investigation could pave the way for meaningful reforms aimed at enhancing operational standards and restoring public trust in governmental institutions.

As the tribunal is formed and begins its proceedings, there is hope that these actions will lead to a more transparent and accountable correctional system in Fiji, ultimately benefiting both the institution and the community it serves.
