The Forestry Ministry of Fiji has set aside $10 million for its ambitious initiative aimed at planting 30 million trees over 15 years, achieving a significant milestone with approximately 19 million trees planted throughout the country. However, the ministry is currently grappling with a survival rate of only 45 percent for these newly planted trees, a challenge attributed to the degraded landscapes and difficulties in cultivating indigenous species. It is important to note that the survival statistics do not account for mahogany and pine plantations.

Forestry Minister Alitia Bainivalu emphasized the need for a strategic shift, announcing a reduction in the planting area from 1,800 hectares to 600 hectares. This decision is intended to allow for more concentrated follow-up activities and enhanced monitoring of survival rates within these targeted zones.

To improve the chances of success for the planted trees, the ministry has collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture over the past three years to conduct soil tests. These assessments help determine the environmental conditions necessary for the optimal growth of native species, ensuring they are planted in soils with appropriate pH levels.

Looking ahead, the ministry is evaluating its progress and will submit a budget request for the next fiscal year based on the number of trees planted this year. The proactive measures being undertaken by the Forestry Ministry reflect a strong commitment to enhancing Fiji’s reforestation initiatives, emphasizing sustainable practices alongside the quantity of tree planting.

These efforts align with Fiji’s broader environmental goals, fostering improved conservation practices that promise to bolster biodiversity and combat climate change. The involvement of local communities is expected to enhance the effectiveness of these initiatives, ensuring both environmental sustainability and the needs of the community are met as Fiji aims for a more resilient ecological future.
