The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has been tasked with the significant responsibility of identifying politicians, business figures, chiefs, and religious leaders involved in or supportive of past coups. This urgent matter was highlighted in Parliament by Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Inia Seruiratu, where discussions centered on the vital role of “truth” in moving forward.

During the session, Mr. Seruiratu expressed the need for the commission to operate authentically and effectively, reflecting a consensus among opposition members about the importance of truth-finding. The Fiji TRC Bill 2024 was approved with a vote of 33 in favor and 15 against, empowering the commission with the authority to summon those implicated to share their narratives.

Mr. Seruiratu underscored the imperative nature of the commission’s work, urging that the politicians who instigated the coups need to be identified and held accountable, along with the support network that included businesspeople, chiefs, and religious agents. He emphasized that without the summoning power, the commission may be undermined in its efforts to seek truth and justice.

The TRC is spearheaded by an appointed steering committee led by Assistant Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, who reports directly to the Prime Minister. The committee also includes various assistant ministers from different sectors, affirming a broad representation in this essential undertaking.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka shared insights into the drafting of the TRC Bill, noting extensive consultations with both victims and perpetrators of previous political turmoil. He indicated strong backing for the establishment of the TRC from diverse community members, highlighting a collective desire for healing and social cohesion. Rabuka expressed his belief that the TRC will foster an environment for truth-telling and reconciliation, allowing survivors of political unrest a platform to share their experiences.

Through this initiative, Fiji aims to pave the way for healing and restorative justice, providing hope for a more united society grounded in accountability and understanding.

In summary, the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission symbolizes a significant step towards addressing past grievances in Fiji, promoting a future built on transparency and healing. With community support and a committed approach, this initiative holds the potential to foster national unity and forge a stronger, more resilient society moving forward.
