The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has established a robust system for determining public transport fares, as highlighted in the recently presented Annual Report covering 2019-2022. Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta informed the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence that since 2019, the commission has taken on the responsibility of setting fares for buses, taxis, carriers, and minibuses.
This new fare-setting framework is designed to reflect current market conditions and the economic capability of consumers. Jiuta explained that this initiative is part of the FCCC’s broader mission to protect consumers, while also ensuring that essential services such as transportation are accessible and affordable.
She stated, “In terms of market intervention, the FCCC was mandated to set fares and charges for public service vehicles. We have developed a strong regulatory framework that will guide future fare reviews.” The FCCC is committed to collaborating with industry stakeholders to fortify the transport sector and cater to the community’s needs, particularly during challenging economic periods.
This ticket fare restructuring aligns with an earlier initiative reported in August 2024, where student fares were transitioned to match adult fares, fully subsidized by the government to avoid financial strain on families. Joel Abraham, the FCCC’s CEO, emphasized that this comprehensive review, which included collaboration with bus industry operators, aims to ensure fair compensation and the sustainability of the transport industry while keeping fares manageable for consumers.
As the FCCC moves forward, it plans to conduct its next bus fare review in September 2024, beginning with data gathering and analysis to ensure future adjustments align with ongoing market trends and the interests of both consumers and the industry.
The establishment of this fare system is a positive development for both consumers and the transport sector, promising a more transparent and equitable approach to fare pricing that considers the needs of all stakeholders involved.
