Fiji’s Training Camp: A New Path for Young Athletes

The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has launched an off-season athletics training camp, providing essential training opportunities for young athletes, particularly from smaller schools, during the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou championed this initiative following concerns over the lack of structured training, which often results in injuries and exhaustion during competitions.

The camp, which commenced three weeks before Christmas, charges a nominal fee of $20 per week and has already attracted approximately 35 participants. Running for six weeks, it will conclude on January 24, just ahead of inter-house competitions scheduled for February. Throughout this program, athletes will be taught foundational skills such as block starts and endurance training, facilitated by experienced coaches, including renowned former athletes like Albert Miler and Banuve Tabakaucoro.

Tafao’ou has expressed his satisfaction with the program’s impact, noting not only improvements in the athletes’ physical capabilities but also significant development in their discipline and time management skills. Parents have observed these positive changes, including their children’s newfound commitment to training, which has helped instill a greater sense of responsibility.

As many attendees previously felt intimidated by competing against established champions, the support provided during the camp has fostered a desire to participate in upcoming events. Encouragingly, this initiative aims to level the playing field, ensuring all student athletes, regardless of their background, can access high-quality training and coaching.

In summary, the FSC off-season athletics training camp represents a commitment to inclusivity and skill development in Fiji’s sports sector. By nurturing young talents and inspiring them to pursue athletics passionately, this initiative not only seeks to benefit individual athletes but also aims to uplift the overall athletics landscape in Fiji, paving the way for future champions on both national and international stages. The initiative inspires hope for the future of athletics in the region, reflecting the enormous potential that exists among the youth.
