Some members of the Lilian Amazon rugby team from Fiji are currently in the United Kingdom to compete in the prestigious LIT Super Sevens Series. Their participation is part of an initiative led by a research team from Loughborough University, recognized as the world’s top institution for sports science studies. The project is focused on collecting data for a study examining the intersection of sport, climate change, and community resilience, which is particularly poignant for the Fijian players who face significant climate-related challenges at home.
Asinate Nabitu, the captain of the Lilian Amazons, described the project as an enlightening experience, emphasizing the impact of climate change on daily life in Fiji. The team is making history as the first women’s rugby squad from Fiji to take part in this series, demonstrating both their competitive spirit and commitment to raising awareness about environmental issues through sport.
The Lilian Amazons have already made notable strides in the series, finishing as Cup runners-up and champions in previous tournaments held in Shelford and Harpenden, and securing a semifinal spot in Bury – St. Edmund. Recently, they clinched victory at the National Pub Sevens in Harpenden, triumphing over the Hong Kong-China national team, who were the defending champions of the series.
This journey not only showcases the team’s remarkable resilience and skills but also reflects the growing momentum and interest in women’s rugby in Fiji. Support from the Fijian community, both locally and abroad, continues to uplift and motivate the players as they embark on this significant journey. Their involvement in this high-caliber series serves as an inspiration for younger female athletes, pointing toward a promising future for women’s rugby in the region.
