The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association has expressed support for the Land Transport Authority’s initiative to trial measures aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the Suva-Nausori corridor. Chief Executive Fantasha Lockington articulated that the private sector is significantly impacted by the inefficiencies caused by traffic issues, which compromise productivity.
Traffic congestion in this corridor, as well as in other areas like Lautoka-Nadi and Sigatoka-Nadi, poses continuous challenges for commuters during peak hours, affecting both businesses and visitors. Lockington highlighted that such delays not only diminish operational efficiency but contribute to rising transportation costs that can jeopardize service quality in both public and private sectors.
The association endorses the proposed trial solutions which include the introduction of slip lanes, traffic light optimization, and restrictions on right turns. Lockington hopes that these measures will be extended to Nadi, where similar congestion issues are being faced, especially considering the area’s vulnerability to flooding.
As discussions continue around possible sustainable solutions, such as staggering work and school hours, improving public transport systems, and regulating vehicle imports, Lockington urged policymakers to also confront the underlying problems that have contributed to traffic challenges. She pointed out that these issues could exacerbate road accidents and fatalities, which in turn would adversely affect economic productivity, especially as the country focuses on developing commercial and tourism sectors.
This proactive approach resonates with ongoing government efforts to tackle traffic congestion along key corridors, signaling a hopeful path toward an organized and efficient transport system that ultimately enhances the commuting experience for all residents in Fiji.
In summary, the collaboration between the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association and the Land Transport Authority showcases a unified commitment to internal infrastructure and transport reforms that not only address immediate challenges but also pave the way for enduring solutions to improve connectivity and productivity across the region.
