The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) has expressed strong support for the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) new trial measures aimed at alleviating traffic congestion on the Suva-Nausori corridor. FHTA’s CEO, Fantasha Lockington, emphasized the urgent need for sustainable solutions, especially amidst discussions concerning staggered work and school hours, enhancements to public transport systems, and revisions to vehicle import regulations. She cautioned that failing to address the root causes of traffic congestion may lead to increased road fatalities and reduced economic productivity.
While the trial measures will initially focus on Suva, Lockington stressed the importance of extending these initiatives to Nadi, which experiences similar congestion, particularly during peak hours and flooding. She highlighted that delays on major routes such as Suva-Nausori, Lautoka-Nadi, and Sigatoka-Nadi generate challenges for businesses, workers, and tourists, ultimately affecting operational efficiency and raising transportation costs.
The FHTA is fully supportive of the trial solutions, which include implementing slip lanes, optimizing traffic signal patterns, and limiting right turns. These initial steps are viewed as crucial components of a broader strategy to enhance traffic flow and manage road usage effectively.
This initiative aligns with the government’s comprehensive strategies to improve traffic conditions and urban planning. Previous conversations among the assistant transport minister and LTA representatives have underscored the significance of community engagement and altering driver behaviors to achieve long-term traffic improvements. By promoting public transport use and exploring carpooling options, the authorities aim to decrease vehicle numbers on the roads during peak hours.
The collaboration between the FHTA and the LTA represents a positive outlook for Fiji’s transport infrastructure, signifying a commitment to not only tackle immediate traffic concerns but also foster sustainable urban mobility improvements for all residents. With the upcoming trials, there is hope for a more efficient transportation system that enhances the overall travel experience for commuters.
