Fiji’s Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has confirmed that his mobile phone was confiscated by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) during an investigation linked to allegations of perjury concerning his disclosures. In a press conference, Kamikamica disclosed that FICAC executed a search warrant at the Trade Ministry’s headquarters in Suva, which has prompted him to seek legal counsel to protect his reputation.

The inquiry revolves around his alleged involvement in the appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner, a claim he vehemently denies, stating that it is an “impossibility” to suggest any corruption occurred during the process. He described the allegations as “stupid and ludicrous,” emphasizing his commitment to transparency and accurate governance as he awaits further developments from the Commission of Inquiry (COI).

Kamikamica expressed his hope that the public would scrutinize the COI report comprehensively, signaling a shift towards increased transparency in Fiji’s political operations. He affirmed that these recent events, while distracting, will not deter his dedication to serving the Fijian people. “These occurrences are certainly distractions, but they certainly won’t distract from our priority in this country, which is to serve its people,” he remarked.

This investigative moment carries significant implications for Fiji, reflecting a broader societal desire for accountability in governance. Past discussions have indicated that the tension in the political environment may even catalyze essential reforms and an enhancement of ethical standards across the government. The optimism surrounding FICAC’s commitment to integrity suggests a future where the truth can restore public trust and potentially pave the way for a more accountable government.

Overall, the unfolding situation serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in political accountability, with hopes that it leads to necessary reforms and a more transparent Fiji.
