During a recent media briefing, Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for Trade in Fiji, expressed strong support for China’s role in the Pacific, asserting that China is a friend rather than a threat to Fiji. This statement comes amidst rising geopolitical tensions between Eastern and Western nations.

Ali emphasized the collaborative efforts between Fiji and China to promote trade and investment, aiming to facilitate these opportunities with as little disruption as possible. After returning from a business trip to China, he reported feeling welcomed and well-received, describing the treatment he received as exceptionally positive.

Echoing Ali’s remarks, Liu Ke, the Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, also asserted that China poses no threat to Fiji or its neighboring regions. He encouraged Fijians to visit China to experience its culture and warmth firsthand, suggesting that personal exploration could dispel misconceptions influenced by media narratives. Liu urged the public to visit, engage with the culture, and then form their own opinions about China.

Overall, both officials highlighted the ongoing commitment to maintaining strong ties between Fiji and China, underlining that the relationship continues to thrive amidst global geopolitical dynamics.

This positive affirmation of the relationship between Fiji and China illustrates an optimistic outlook on international cooperation and mutual benefit, potentially leading to greater economic opportunities for Fiji in the future. As nations navigate complex geopolitical landscapes, relationships characterized by trust and friendship can pave the way for sustainable development and growth.
