In January 2025, Fiji welcomed a total of 70,794 tourists, as reported by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics. This figure shows a decrease from December 2024, which recorded 83,840 arrivals. The breakdown of January visitors indicates that 69,653 traveled by air, while a small number of 1,141 arrivals came by sea. The latter group mainly consisted of 1,137 seamen on fishing vessels, with only 4 arriving by yacht.

The motivations for travel among January’s visitors revealed that a significant portion, 78.9%, came to Fiji for holiday purposes. In addition, 7.2% traveled to reconnect with friends or relatives, while business travel accounted for 1.4%. The remaining 12.5% cited other reasons for their visits.

A noteworthy demographic detail is that 35,430 of the arrivals hailed from Australia, making it the largest source market, followed by 12,373 visitors from New Zealand. This pattern is consistent with previous months where Australia has consistently fueled the majority of tourist traffic to Fiji, reaffirming its importance in the country’s tourism landscape.

Despite the decline in tourist numbers from December, the ongoing interest in Fiji as a vacation destination remains evident. The tourism sector appears poised for continued recovery as visitor preferences lean towards vacation experiences in tranquil settings like Fiji, promising economic benefits for local communities and stakeholders involved.

The data reflects a trend that indicates a potential rebound in overall numbers as the year progresses, providing hope that tourism will continue to flourish in Fiji, promoting both economic growth and cultural exchange.
