Fiji’s Tourism Surge: Will 1 Million Visitors Become Reality?

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka announced that in the first eight months of this year, Fiji welcomed over 640,274 visitors. Speaking at the Fiji Tourism Convention 2024, Gavoka noted that visitor numbers for July and August have already exceeded the targeted 90,000 per month, crucial for reaching the overall goal of over 1 million visitors for the year.

Gavoka expressed confidence in achieving this target through enhanced marketing efforts, expanded air connectivity, infrastructure improvements, and a strong commitment to sustainable tourism practices. He emphasized that the government has developed policies and frameworks to support Fiji’s tourism ambitions. Historically, Fiji has not adopted an open skies policy, recognizing the challenges of limited air traffic and long routes in the South Pacific.

He acknowledged the changing landscape of aviation and the global shift towards liberalized air traffic rights. The government is now cautiously reviewing Fiji’s Aviation Policy, considering open skies agreements on a case-by-case basis while prioritizing national interests.

Gavoka highlighted the government’s role in fostering a conducive environment for tourism growth, underscoring the importance of collaboration with the private sector to advance the industry. He concluded by stating that this is an opportunity to position Fiji not only as a travel destination but also as a symbol of hope, sustainability, and resilience.
