Fiji’s Tourism Sector Takes a Green Leap: Recycling Forum Set for 2024

Several hotels and resorts have confirmed their participation in the first Tourism Recycling Forum organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation and Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited. Set to take place on September 18, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, the event is being hosted in collaboration with Tourism Fiji, Paradise Beverages Limited, and Tanoa Hotel Group.

This forum is a significant development for Fiji’s tourism sector, underscoring its essential role in the national economy and its dedication to environmental sustainability. The event will gather hotel and resort operators from Suva, Nadi, and other areas to tackle common recycling challenges faced by WRFL and to introduce an innovative program aimed at recovering used glass bottles from participating venues.

Amitesh Deo, Founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for the forum. He stated, “The Forum presents a unique chance for hotels and resorts to collaboratively improve their recycling practices. As we undertake this initiative, it is evident that recycling and effective waste management are crucial for preserving the environment.”

Deo also noted the growing significance of environmentally friendly practices in the post-COVID landscape. He said, “Today’s travelers are increasingly conscious of their environmental footprint and prefer destinations that align with their values. Our commitment to recycling and sustainability has become indispensable. This forum will allow our tourism partners to adopt best practices and demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship.”

By engaging in this event, hotels and resorts will play a vital role in promoting recycling initiatives and supporting sustainable tourism practices. Their participation will not only meet global standards and attract eco-conscious tourists but also aid in decreasing dependence on open dumpsites and landfills for hotel and resort waste disposal.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, will officiate this significant event.
