Fiji’s Tourism Sector Takes a Bold Step Toward Sustainability

Several resorts and hotels have confirmed their involvement in the first-ever Tourism Recycling Forum, organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation and Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited.

The event is set to take place on September 18, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, with the support of Tourism Fiji, Paradise Beverages Limited, and Tanoa Hotel Group.

This Forum is seen as a significant advancement for Fiji’s tourism industry, underscoring its crucial role in the national economy and its dedication to environmental sustainability.

Participants from resorts and hotels across Suva, Nadi, and other regions will gather to tackle common recycling challenges faced by Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited and to launch a novel program aimed at recovering used Paradise Beverage glass bottles from participating locations.

Amitesh Deo, the Founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, conveyed his excitement for this initiative.

“The Forum provides a distinctive opportunity for hotels and resorts to work together to improve recycling practices. As we embark on this journey, it is evident that recycling and effective waste management are essential for protecting our environment,” he stated.

Deo emphasized the growing significance of eco-friendly practices in the post-COVID age.

“Today’s travelers are increasingly mindful of their environmental impact and prefer destinations that align with their values. Our commitment to recycling and sustainability has become essential. This Forum will empower our tourism partners to adopt best practices and demonstrate their dedication to environmental accountability,” he added.

By taking part in this event, resorts and hotels will significantly contribute to improving recycling initiatives and promoting sustainable tourism practices. Their participation not only aligns with international standards and attracts eco-aware travelers but also aids in reducing dependence on open dumps and landfills for disposing of hotel and resort waste.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, will preside over this landmark event.
