Fiji’s tourism sector is focused on rebuilding with an emphasis on sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience. This effort includes diversifying tourism offerings and enhancing disaster preparedness. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka addressed the Tourism Resilience Summit in Sendai, Japan, emphasizing the challenges faced by tourism in recent years, such as natural disasters and global pandemics, which have tested the resilience of communities and economies.
Mr. Gavoka remarked that tourism is not merely an industry but a vital lifeline for many people and businesses in Fiji. He highlighted the devastating impact of cyclones, particularly mentioning Cyclone Winston, the worst natural disaster in the Southern Hemisphere.
In the wake of these challenges, Fiji has taken the opportunity to rebuild with strength. Historically, the tourism sector has demonstrated remarkable recovery following crises, from the SARS outbreak to the COVID-19 pandemic. This time of recovery is being utilized to establish a more resilient and diverse economic foundation and to forge sustainable public-private partnerships.
Mr. Gavoka stressed the importance of having a coordinated approach involving multiple stakeholders, referencing the establishment of Fiji’s Tourism Response Team (TRT). This team includes members from various sectors such as the Tourism Ministry, the National Disaster Management Office, hotel associations, and national transport services. Efforts are underway to formalize the TRT to ensure proactive planning and clearly defined roles for each member agency.
Tourism plays a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, contributing nearly 40% to the country’s GDP. The sector exceeded expectations in 2023 by welcoming over 929,740 visitors, who together added approximately $3.3 billion to the visitor economy.
This initiative by Fiji’s tourism sector demonstrates a proactive approach and a commitment to a sustainable future, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity. As the world learns to better prepare for unforeseen challenges, Fiji stands as a testament to how tourism can adapt and thrive while keeping economic vitality and community well-being at its core.
In summary, Fiji’s focus on sustainable tourism development, combined with comprehensive disaster resilience strategies, not only strengthens the economy but also supports communities in becoming more adaptable to future challenges.
