During the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s roundtable discussions held in Nadi on Global Recycling Day, Sharma pointed out that individual hotels alone cannot resolve the issue; instead, a collective effort involving tourism entities and government agencies is crucial.
Sharma emphasized the inclusion of waste management strategies within the National Sustainable Tourism Framework, which aims to incorporate recycling practices into hotel operations. Hotels in various regions, particularly Nadi, are actively exploring options for recycling, especially concerning food waste management. Many establishments are already taking action, such as utilizing dispensers and reusable bottles in hotel rooms to minimize their environmental footprint.
Supporting this call for action, Amitesh Deo, CEO of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, previously highlighted the urgent necessity for the tourism sector to confront its role in waste production. He noted that achieving long-term sustainability requires a shift in the narrative around waste management, which is essential for maintaining Fiji’s attractiveness as a destination for eco-aware travelers. The initiatives discussed during the roundtable not only aim at improving environmental conditions but also resonate with the values of a growing number of conscious tourists.
Another significant initiative is the collaboration between the Ministries of Tourism and Local Government, which are jointly working on the Na Vualiku project to implement sustainable waste disposal solutions in Fiji’s Northern Division. Sharma remarked, “There are initiatives in place, and we just need to bring them together,” reinforcing the need for collective responsibility in effectively tackling waste management challenges.
