Fiji’s Tourism Sector Faces Waste Crisis: A Call for Unity

The ongoing challenge of waste management within Fiji’s tourism sector calls for a unified effort among stakeholders, according to Sheema Sharma, the permanent secretary for Local Government. Speaking at the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s roundtable discussions on Global Recycling Day in Nadi, Sharma emphasized that individual hotels cannot tackle the issue alone; rather, collaboration among tourism players and government agencies is essential.

Sharma highlighted that the National Sustainable Tourism Framework includes waste management strategies aimed at integrating recycling practices into hotel operations. She noted that hotels across various regions, including Nadi, are exploring recycling options, particularly in food waste management. The use of dispensers and reusable bottles in hotel rooms illustrates steps already being taken by some establishments to lessen their environmental impact.

Echoing her sentiments, Amitesh Deo, the CEO of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, previously articulated the pressing need for the tourism sector to address its contribution to waste generation. He remarked that long-term sustainability hinges on changing the narrative around waste management, which is vital for preserving Fiji’s appeal as a tourist destination. Initiatives like those discussed in the roundtable support a healthier environment and align with the interests of increasingly eco-conscious travelers.

The partnership between the Ministries of Tourism and Local Government is also noteworthy, as they are collaboratively working on the Na Vualiku project to implement sustainable waste disposal solutions in the Northern Division of Fiji. Sharma stated, “There are initiatives in place, and we just need to bring them together,” reinforcing the importance of collective responsibility in addressing waste management effectively.

In conclusion, there is a positive and hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s approach to waste management in the tourism sector. By promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship, Fiji not only aims to enhance its reputation as a tourist destination but also fosters community well-being and preserves its beautiful natural environment for future generations.
