Fiji’s tourism industry is focusing on a sustainable and resilient recovery, prioritizing inclusive practices and diverse tourism options following recent adversities. At the Tourism Resilience Summit in Sendai, Japan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka highlighted the challenges faced by the sector, from natural disasters to global health crises, which have tested the resilience of communities and economies.

Gavoka emphasized that tourism is vital for many Fijians and recognized the sector’s vulnerabilities. He pointed to devastating cyclones, notably TC Winston, the worst natural disaster recorded in the Southern Hemisphere, as examples of challenges that have forced a reevaluation of practices in the industry.

Reflecting on past crises such as the SARS outbreak and the global financial crisis, Gavoka noted the tourism sector’s remarkable ability to recover and how this recovery phase is being utilized to foster resilience and establish a more diverse economic foundation. He mentioned initiatives like sustainable public-private partnerships and strategic policies that will guide Fiji’s tourism growth now and in the future.

The establishment of a Tourism Response Team (TRT) brings together key stakeholders, including government bodies and industry representatives, to ensure better coordination and planning not only during crises but beforehand. Gavoka underscored the importance of clear communication regarding roles and responsibilities among team members to enhance operational effectiveness.

Tourism is crucial for Fiji, contributing nearly 40 percent of the nation’s GDP. In an encouraging sign for the industry, visitor numbers surpassed expectations in 2023, reaching nearly one million and generating $3.3 billion in economic impact.

This proactive and strategic approach signals a hopeful future for Fiji’s tourism sector, as it seeks to build a foundation for sustainable growth and resilience against future challenges.

Fiji’s unwavering commitment to reinvention and resilience could serve as a model for other tourism-dependent regions worldwide, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for sustainable practices in the face of climate change and other global challenges.
