Geoffrey Shaw, the former owner of Castaway Island in Fiji and a director of Tokoriki Island Resort, has died. Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, which Shaw co-owned until he sold his shares in 2014, honored him in a tribute posted on their Facebook page, stating that he “very gently passed away on the morning of Sunday, September 22, 2024.”
The resort described Shaw as a “gentleman and pioneer,” noting that “Fiji will forever be indebted” to him, and he will always be remembered by the Outrigger Fiji community. They extended their condolences to Shaw’s family during this time and wished him eternal peace.
Shaw was a prominent advocate for environmental sustainability in tourism, serving as the chairman of the Mamanuca Environment Society from 2004 until his death. Castaway Island, now operated by Outrigger Hotels & Resorts, was a founding member of this society.
In 2022, Shaw was appointed to the board of directors of Tokoriki Island Resort, where owners Andrew Turnbull and family highlighted his extensive 50-year experience in the Fijian tourism sector. Shaw purchased the renowned Castaway Island in 1992 and established Outrigger on the Coral Coast in 2000, overseeing all aspects of management and employing over 800 staff.
In 2014, he sold both resorts, which had a combined total of 320 rooms, to Outrigger Hotels Hawaii. Additionally, Shaw held the position of deputy chairman of Tourism Fiji and chairman of Airports Fiji Ltd.
