Fiji’s Tourism Pioneer Geoffrey Shaw Bids Farewell

Geoffrey Shaw, the former owner of Castaway Island in Fiji and director of Tokoriki Island Resort, has died. Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, which he co-owned until selling his shares in 2014, paid tribute to him on their Facebook page, stating that he “very gently passed away on the morning of Sunday, September 22, 2024.”

The resort expressed their condolences, describing Shaw as a “gentleman and pioneer” to whom Fiji will always be indebted. They extended their heartfelt sympathies to his family, wishing him eternal peace.

A prominent advocate for environmental sustainability in tourism, Shaw served as chairman of the Mamanuca Environment Society from 2004 until his death. Castaway Island, which is now operated by Outrigger Hotels & Resorts, was a founding member of this organization.

In 2022, he was appointed to the board of directors at Tokoriki Island Resort by owners Andrew Turnbull and his family, who highlighted Shaw’s extensive knowledge and over 50 years of experience in the Fijian tourism sector.

Shaw acquired the iconic Castaway Island in 1992 and launched Outrigger on the Coral Coast in 2000, playing an active role in management, marketing, and strategic decisions for both resorts while overseeing a team of more than 800 employees. He sold both resorts, collectively comprising 320 rooms, to Outrigger Hotels Hawaii in 2014.

Additionally, Shaw held significant positions as deputy chairman of Tourism Fiji and chairman of Airports Fiji Ltd.
