Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism & Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka has refuted media reports suggesting that foreign airline crew members, who were purportedly victims of robbery and sexual assault, were detained by authorities. The Ministry confirmed that investigations are underway following two separate incidents that occurred early Wednesday morning in a nightclub area in Nadi.

Mr. Gavoka stated that a suspect, known to the police regarding the alleged sexual assault, has already been questioned, and the investigation is ongoing. He clarified that the incidents involved two different crew members, one reporting theft and the other sexual assault.

In his statement, Gavoka expressed the government’s concern for the crew members’ health and well-being, noting that they are in good condition and are currently being accommodated in a designated hotel for crew layovers. The crew members have been advised to remain within the hotel vicinity to assist with the police investigation and are expected to return home by the end of the week.

He urged the international media to be more responsible in their reporting and avoid sensationalizing events without solid evidence. While acknowledging that such regrettable incidents can happen anywhere, he reminded tourists to exercise caution in nightlife areas late at night.

As a positive note, it is reassuring to see that the authorities are taking these allegations seriously and are focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of both tourists and residents. This situation serves as a reminder for the importance of safety and vigilance in all destinations.

In summary, while the incidents reported are concerning, both the government and local authorities are committed to addressing the situation swiftly, demonstrating a proactive approach in maintaining the safety and security of all individuals in Fiji.
