Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism & Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka has addressed media reports that suggested crew members from a foreign airline were detained after being allegedly robbed and sexually assaulted, labeling these claims as false.

The Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation confirmed that local authorities are investigating two separate incidents that took place early Wednesday morning in an entertainment area in Nadi. A suspect, already known to the police for the alleged sexual assault, has been questioned, and the investigation is ongoing.

Gavoka conveyed that the incidents involve two different crew members, one related to alleged theft and the other to an alleged sexual assault. He expressed concern for their well-being, stating, “Our thoughts and concerns are with them and for their health and well-being.”

The three crew members, who are in good health, are currently accommodated in a designated hotel for layovers and are expected to return home by the end of the week. They have been advised by their headquarters to stay within the hotel’s vicinity to ensure their safety and assist with ongoing police investigations.

Mr. Gavoka reminded international media to report responsibly and avoid sensationalizing such incidents, urging caution when covering events that occur in areas frequented by tourists. He acknowledged that while Fiji is a popular tourist destination, it is not exempt from such unfortunate events. He encouraged travelers to remain vigilant, especially in nightclub areas during late hours.

In summary, the situation reflects ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of both locals and visitors. Authorities remain committed to investigating these incidents thoroughly and prioritizing the well-being of those involved. This incident should serve as a reminder for travelers everywhere to exercise caution while enjoying nightlife.
