Fiji’s Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, addressed the unfortunate incident at the Warwick Fiji resort, where seven women were hospitalized after consuming a cocktail. While recognizing the gravity of the situation, he emphasized that it appears to be an isolated incident.

During a press conference, Minister Gavoka expressed his sympathy for the affected guests and their families, assuring the public that they are receiving high-quality medical attention. He noted that the guests’ conditions were stable and stated hopes for their continued recovery.

The health team has already begun preliminary investigations, and no additional cases have been reported. Furthermore, comprehensive testing is ongoing, supported by both the Ministry of Health and the Fiji Police Force, to determine the cause of the incident.

Minister Gavoka reassured both local and international tourists that this issue is unique to the specific bar involved at the resort, which has long maintained a solid reputation among visitors, particularly from Australia. He reiterated that the resort staff confirmed no unusual practices regarding ingredient substitutions or drink quality.

As the festive season approaches, the Fijian Government encourages travelers to continue practicing standard safety precautions regarding their food and drink consumption while enjoying the island’s offerings. The overall tourism environment in Fiji remains safe, with nearly a million visitors arriving annually without major safety concerns, reinforcing faith in the country’s tourism sector.

In light of these events, a recent update to travel advisories for Australian tourists included reminders to remain alert to risks associated with drink spiking and methanol poisoning, advising swift medical attention if necessary.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance while enjoying travel experiences, yet the swift response from authorities and the assurance of safety can help restore confidence in Fiji’s tourism industry. With robust support systems in place, visitors can look forward to enjoying all that Fiji has to offer in a secure and welcoming environment.
