Provisional figures released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics reveal a significant decrease in visitor arrivals for February 2025, dropping to 49,483. This represents a decline of 30.1% compared to the previous month, January 2025, which saw 70,794 tourists. While this drop is noteworthy, it reflects seasonal fluctuations that are commonly observed in the tourism industry.

Among the February visitors, 48,952 arrived by air, and 531 via sea, mainly comprising seamen from fishing vessels, with a mere 18 arrivals documented from yachts. Vacationers made up the predominant segment at 70.2%, followed by those visiting friends and relatives at 9.4%, business travelers at 3.2%, and individuals traveling for other reasons at 17.2%.

Australia continues to be a crucial contributor to Fiji’s tourism, with 17,812 visitors from the country. New Zealand also plays a significant role, with 8,626 tourists. This trend mirrors previous months, underscoring the importance of these two nations in sustaining Fiji’s tourism industry.

Despite this recent downturn in visitor numbers, there remains a hopeful outlook for Fiji as a vacation hotspot. The local tourism sector has demonstrated resilience in previous years, and with potential increases in travel as the year unfolds, there is optimism for a rebound in arrivals. Efforts to market Fiji’s stunning natural landscapes and warm hospitality are expected to play a vital role in attracting visitors.

As authorities focus on drawing a diverse range of tourists, the prospect of recovery appears promising, ensuring that Fiji continues to be a preferred destination for those seeking both relaxation and adventure. It is hoped that, with sustained efforts, the tourism industry will regain its footing and contribute positively to the local economy.
