Andrew Turnbull, the owner of Tokoriki Island Resort, has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ANZ Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards 2024. The event took place over the weekend at the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort. Turnbull expressed his surprise at receiving the award, highlighting his deep connection to Fiji, stating, “Fiji has given me more than I’ve given to Fiji.”
Celebrating 30 years of ownership of Tokoriki Island Resort this September, Turnbull noted that his investment has yielded a substantial return, saying, “For every $1 I’ve put into it, I’ve got a $1.50 back.” His pride in the country and the resort is evident, as he emphasized that his dedicated staff are the key to the resort’s success, sharing, “The difference between us and other people is our staff. We treat them like family.”
Turnbull also mentioned his unique role as not only a business owner but a mentor to his staff, comparing the growth of his family to that of his resort team. Currently, he has one daughter and a staff of about 150, and he feels strongly committed to providing them a safe and prosperous workplace.
The award was praised by Fantasha Lockington, chief executive officer of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, who noted that Turnbull’s impact on the industry extends well beyond his personal achievements. With a career spanning over 25 years, his efforts have been instrumental in shaping the future of tourism in Fiji and in advocating for the betterment of the sector as a whole.
This recognition of Turnbull’s contributions highlights the importance of leadership and commitment in the tourism industry and serves as an inspiration for others. His story reflects the potential for individuals to make a significant positive impact in their communities, fostering both economic growth and a sense of family within the workforce.
